De alternatieve pop met een donker randje van deze songsmid schetst geen Instagramwaardig plaatje, maar wordt juist daardoor wereldwijd in de harten gesloten. Ook drie volwassen platen later nog, want de Amerikaanse blinkt uit in eigenzinnigheid. Ontroerende ballads met enkel een akoestische gitaar, uitwaaierende refreinen op breakbeats of juist luchtige evergreens: Halsey toont veel kanten, met haar betoverende stem als rode draad.
