PINKPOP, the Netherland’s oldest and best-known pop music festival, was organised for the first time in 1970, on Pentecost (called ‘Pinksteren’ in Dutch) Monday, the 18th of May, in Geleen. PINKPOP actually stands for “Pop at Pinksteren” and, with the exception of 2008, has always taken place during Pentecost. Initially, the festival was a one-day festival, but it gradually grew to a multi-day event in the city of Geleen. So-called “sleep-ins” were first set up for people staying overnight, but in 1976 the first festival campsite was taken into use. After being sold out for six years running, selling 50,000 tickets, pop music festivals on the whole began to experience serious competition from stadium concerts in 1982 and, like others, PINKPOP had several difficult years, with 1985 as the low point. All this changed when the organisers entered into a collaboration with Mojo Concerts, the Netherlands’ leading concert organiser, in 1986. Production remained under the control of Buro Pinkpop, and the 1986 festival was completely sold out again. Due to renovations at the Geleen location, PINKPOP was forced to move to Baarlo for the 1987 festival, where it had its 18th edition under terrible weather conditions. However, the festival did not return to Geleen but established itself in the new county of Landgraaf, at the former racetrack, between Heerlen and Kerkrade and 230 kilometres from Amsterdam. The new location turned out to be a godsend, as the festival grew year after year, both in visitor numbers and in quality. In 1990 the festival was included in the famous Guinness Record Book as the oldest and only uninterrupted yearly open-air pop festival of the Netherlands, if not the world (as some experts say). In 1994 Pinkpop’s 25th anniversary was celebrated in style. The festival was completely sold out, with over 70,000 visitors, including over 25,000 campers. The 25th anniversary was a phenomenal success, although the organisers did instate a visitor limit of 60,000 to ease the burden on the festival’s resources and improve comfort. In 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 the 30th, 31st, 32nd and 33rd editions were completely sold out. Meanwhile, the number of visitors camping rose to 47,500. In 2003, 2004 and 2005 Pinkpop had a few more difficult years in terms of visitor numbers, with a low point in 2005. The weak line-up drew no more than 20,000 enthusiasts. However, PINKPOP returned to form in 2006 and, with 68,000 visitors, was sold out again, as it was in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Last year the 40th anniversary edition had a notable headliner in Bruce Springsteen & The E-street Band, doing his first headline show on a European festival ever.
Over the course of 40 uninterrupted years of the festival more than 1.8 million (unique) paying visitors have passed the gates and the festival has been sold out 20 times! The very first PINKPOP had a budget of almost 10,000 Guilders, a ticket price of 2.50 Guilders (slightly over 1 Euro!) and a line-up consisting mainly of national pop groups, with GOLDEN EARRING as headliners. Until 1993 there had been a maximum line-up of ten bands on the Pentecost Monday, while in Landgraaf the festival campsites were already being warmed up by, among other things, a pop line-up called “Rocking Kolonia”. In 1994, during its 25th anniversary, the festival underwent a true transformation. There were two outside stages and a stage in a big tent. From this point the full line-up consisted of a minimum of 30 groups and/or artists. In all these years, countless famous names graced the stages, from FLEETWOOD MAC to DIRE STRAITS and from PEARL JAM to RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. For many groups PINKPOP was a stepping stone to greater fame, both for national and international artists. In 1995 the location, the fantastic 27-hectare event grounds, was renamed MEGALAND. Various campsites around the festival grounds now offer space to up to 50,000 people. The festival also includes a festival market.
Since 1973 PINKPOP has been sponsored by various well-known brands. The first was jeans brand LOIS. Important sponsors in recent years have been BRAND BIER, COCA COLA, POSTBANK and ESSENT. The official festival newspaper is made by the monthly magazine LIVEXS, as well as the newspaper METRO, which has been involved for several years. For years, the festival has also worked together with two important charities, namely OXFAM NOVIB and AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL. In 2008 Pinkpop was awarded the GREEN & CLEAN AWARD for its work in implementing positive environmental measures.
The festival has been covered on radio and tv by public broadcasting organisations for over 34 years now. Since the 25th edition the festival has been broadcast live for many hours each Pentecost Monday on Nederland 3, by the broadcasting organisations NPS, VARA and VPRO, while radio 3FM has live broadcasts from the festival grounds on all three days. The festival has also been broadcast on 3voor12 Internet tv for several years. The Pinkpop website is visited by more than 2.3 million unique visitors every year. The “Golden Tip” campaign drew 18,578 voters this year.
In 2010 the 41th edition will take place on Friday May 28th, Saturday May 29th and Sunday May 30th . The fourth edition of PINKPOP CLASSIC is planned for Saturday the 14th of August.
